Bay Windows

Bay windows create beautiful architectural focal points that extend living space outward while flooding rooms with natural light.

Bring more space and sunlight into your home

Bay windows extend beyond exterior walls, creating cozy window seats, plant displays, and panoramic views of your surroundings. In Gulf South homes, bay windows transform ordinary rooms into brighter, more spacious areas that feel larger without adding square footage.

LAS designs and installs custom bay windows built specifically for our Southern climate, engineered to handle heat, humidity, and storm conditions while providing the energy efficiency Gulf Coast homeowners need.

Whether you're remodeling a historic New Orleans home, updating a Metairie residence, or building new construction on the Northshore, bay windows add character and function that standard flat windows can't match in:

  • Living rooms and front sitting rooms where they create natural gathering spots
  • Dining rooms where extended views enhance meals
  • Primary bedrooms where they add luxury and morning light
  • Kitchens when space allows for a bright breakfast nook feel
  • Anywhere you want a focal point and expanded view

How Do Bay Windows Work?

Bay windows consist of three or more window panels joined at angles to project outward from your home's exterior wall. The typical configuration includes a large center window flanked by two smaller side windows set at 30 or 45-degree angles.

The side windows can be operable casement or double-hung styles, allowing ventilation from multiple directions, or they can be fixed for a streamlined look.

Bay windows are built as separate units in our facility, then installed into framed openings that accommodate the angled projection. LAS uses custom angled mullions and trim for a polished, finished look. The angled design creates interior space at the window base, perfect for seating, storage, or display.

Bay Windows vs. Bow Windows

Bay and bow windows both project outward to bring in more light, but the shape is different. Bay windows typically use three angled panels for a more defined look and a deeper interior ledge. Bow windows use four to six panels in a gentle curve for a softer exterior profile and a wider arc of glass. Traditional facades and straight rooflines tend to pair naturally with bay windows, while contemporary elevations or softer exterior lines often look best with a bow window.

Which is right for our home?

  • Choose a bay window if you want a more defined, angled look and a deeper interior ledge that works well for a window seat, plants, or extra display space.
  • Choose a bow window if you want a softer curved profile and a wider arc of glass that spreads natural light across the room more evenly.

Features of Our Bay Windows

LAS bay windows are custom built for Gulf South conditions with features that deliver lasting performance:

  • Dual pane insulated glass options: Standard dual pane construction provides excellent insulation and condensation resistance for our humid climate.
  • Low-E glass options: Low-emissivity coatings reflect heat while transmitting light, reducing solar heat gain and lowering cooling costs.
  • Unique grid patterns and styles: Choose from various grid configurations to match your home's architectural style, from colonial to contemporary.
  • Frame colors and finish options: Select exterior colors that complement your home and interior finishes that coordinate with your décor.
  • Built and installed for Gulf South heat, humidity, and storm conditions: Our bay windows are engineered specifically for Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama coastal conditions, not generic products shipped from cold climates.

FAQs

What is the difference between a bay window and a bow window?

Bay windows typically use three flat window panels joined at angles, creating an angular projection with distinct corners. Bow windows use four to six window panels joined in a gentle curve, creating a rounded appearance. Bay windows typically project further from the wall and create more usable interior floor space, while bow windows provide a subtler exterior profile and softer aesthetic.

Can bay windows include operable side windows?

Yes. Bay windows can be configured with operable side windows that open for ventilation. Alternatively, all three panels can be fixed for a streamlined look. The choice depends on your ventilation needs and preferences. Operable side windows provide excellent cross-ventilation from multiple angles.

Do bay windows work well in hot, humid climates?

Yes, when properly designed for Gulf Coast conditions. LAS bay windows use dual pane Low-E glass that blocks solar heat gain while transmitting natural light, keeping rooms comfortable despite our intense sun. Proper installation with adequate flashing and sealing prevents moisture intrusion in our humid climate. The key is choosing windows engineered for heat and humidity, not generic products designed for moderate climates.

What affects the cost of a bay window?

Several factors influence bay window pricing including the window's size and projection depth, whether side windows are operable or fixed, glass package options like Low-E coatings, grid patterns and custom configurations, frame colors beyond standard options, and installation complexity based on your home's construction. Custom bay windows cost more than standard flat windows but add significant value through expanded space, natural light, and architectural character.

How long does bay window installation typically take?

Most bay window installations complete in one to two days depending on the opening size, structural modifications needed, and weather conditions. Our installation process includes removing the existing window or wall section, framing the angled opening if needed, installing the bay window unit, sealing and flashing all connections, finishing interior and exterior trim, and final inspection and cleanup. We work efficiently to minimize disruption while ensuring quality installation.

How do bay windows improve ventilation?

When equipped with operable side windows, bay windows provide exceptional ventilation and airflow control. Opening the angled side panels allows fresh air to enter from multiple directions, promoting effective cross-ventilation and improving indoor air quality. This flexibility makes it easier to cool your home naturally during mild weather, reduce reliance on HVAC systems, and create a more comfortable living environment.

Are bay windows energy efficient?

Modern bay windows can be outfitted with advanced energy-efficient glass options specifically designed for warmer climates. Dual-pane Low-E glass helps reflect heat while still allowing ample natural light to pass through, reducing solar heat gain and maintaining a consistent indoor temperature. These features help keep rooms cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter, and can contribute to lower energy bills while enhancing overall comfort year-round.
